Michael McIntyre’s Work Connect Experience

Michael McIntyre photo 2What was your experience with Work Connect?

I have started volunteering 3 days a week with Portrait of a City at the Rathmore Centre. I have always been interested in Photoshop as a hobby and now I put my skills to use by fixing up images, scanning etc. for members of the public who want to restore old photos/images.

How did you benefit from the Work Connect programme?

When I started the programme I lacked confidence and since starting to volunteer I feel I have something to look forward to. My health has improved; I have lost weight and feel better overall. My self- esteem has increased and I now feel more open to the possibilities that are out there.  I feel that the programme has been beneficial and supportive of my needs. Initially I found it frustrating looking for jobs as they had specific requirements e.g. qualifications and a lack of suitable vacancies as I am 59. With the support I got on Work Connect I feel more determined to find a job

Did you secure employment through Work Connect?

I wanted to work in security but I didn’t have my SIA license so couldn’t apply for jobs. Work Connect supported me in obtaining a place on SIA Door Security Course and I have been offered a job at a local fast food outlet pending results and receiving my SIA License.

Would you recommend the Work Connect Programme to others?

I would definitely recommend Work Connect as it turned my life around. Every Sunday evening I really look forward to the start of a new week on a Monday morning.
